DWodp live installation notes

DWodp live should work on any web server with PHP 4.1.0 or greater.

  • Unzip the files and place them in their respective directories
    • images
      • dwodp.jpg
      • folder.gif
      • star.gif
    • includes
      • classes.inc.php
      • config.inc.php
    • templates
      • advanced_links.tpl
      • advanced_thumbshots.tpl
      • copyright.tpl
      • footer.tpl
      • header.tpl
      • mainpage.tpl
      • odp_attribution.tpl
      • search_heavyload.tpl
      • search_noresult.tpl
      • searchbox.tpl
      • thumbshots.tpl
      • thumbshots_attribution.tpl
    • index.php

  • Edit the file called config.inc.php from the includes directory in your favourite text editor, such as Notepad and you should see something like this

<?php

// Cache the results of browse category pages to speed up your directory
$use_cache = 1;

// How often in seconds to refresh a cached version of a page
$cache_refresh = 9000;

// Use short access method e.g http://domain.com/index.php/Arts/ instead of
// http://domain.com/index.php?c=/Arts/
// If you are using Linux or a Unix flavour on Apache and you are getting
// a 404 error message when using short mode see
// http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/core.html#acceptpathinfo
//
// Alternatively you could use mod_rewrite to achieve this method
$use_short = 0;

// Title of your site
$sitetitle = "DWodp live";

// The root url of the Open Directory
$rooturl = "http://dmoz.org";

// Do you want to restrict your site to a default category
$rootcategory = "";

// Path to the ODP image directory
$ODP_images = "/img/";

// HTTP path to your local images directory
// This must be a root url if you are using short mode
$Local_images = "/dwodp/images/";

// Target for links
// Can be _self, _blank, _top, _self, a frame name or simply leave it blank
$LinkTarget = "";

// Use advanced site listings
// This is more dependant of the specific HTML of the DMOZ site
$AdvancedListings = 1;

// Use thumbshots with the directory
// Thumbshots are screenshots of web pages in thumbnail sizes from
// http://www.thumbshots.org/
// If you make use of this option please read
// http://www.thumbshots.org/license.pxf and
// http://www.thumbshots.org/attribution.pxf
// This requires Advanced Listings to be enabled
// 1 = Enable
// 0 = Disable
$AllowThumbShots = 1;

?>

  • You will probably need to make changes to this file. To make changes to any of the default settings, enter the correct setting between the two sets of "quotes".
    • $use_cache - Cache retrieved ODP pages
    • $cache_refresh - Refresh period in seconds when DWodp live should query the live data instead of a cached version
    • $use_short - Use short mode functionality on the directory (see FAQ for more info)
    • $sitetitle - The title of your site / directory
    • $rooturl - The root url to the ODP. This should work fine without changes
    • $rootcategory - Only fill this in if you wish to bypass the main category page and go straight to a particular category
    • $ODP_images - The path to the images directory on ODP
    • $Local_images - The path to the images folder for your local directory. This should be a root relative url if you use mod_rewrite
    • $LinkTarget - This allows you to target sites to a specific window or a new window
    • $AdvancedListings - This uses the advanced_links.tpl template to render external site listings
    • $AllowThumbshots - The same as using $AdvancedListings except it makes use of ThumbShots.org site thumbnails technology.

  • Upload the files to your server using the same directory structures as defined

  • If you set $use_cache to 1 in your config file you will need to create a directory within the main DWodp live directory called 'cache' and chmod to at least 757

  • Your directory will now work. You may wish to edit the files in the templates directory to intergrate with your site design (see the FAQ for more details on the templates)
